Introduction

Welcome to my Beat the Jolly review, where I’m taking a look at this horse racing tips service that is taking a bold approach by going against the crowd.

A lot of punters like backing favourites, but the question is, how often do those short-priced “bankers” actually deliver value?

This tipster’s answer is pretty clear. They reckon that favourites are overrated and there’s much better value to be found elsewhere.

Rather than tipping odds on shots, they look for runners that the market has overlooked. They aim to find horses with genuine chances of causing an upset, or at the very least, outrunning their odds.

The idea is simple – let the crowd pile into the jolly, while you quietly back the value.

Beat the Jolly has delivered a 7.4% ROI and a 15.4% strike rate from 940 bets so far, with all results recorded to Betfair Starting Price (BSP).

It’s refreshing to see a service focusing on Betfair Exchange profits instead of bookmaker only prices, but let’s see how they perform in a live trial.

Putting It to the Test

I’ve had a look through the full results sheet provided by the tipster, which goes back to 2023 and features profit/loss recorded at Betfair SP.

Unfortunately, it’s not in a format that I can easily analyse myself, but I’ve taken a look through it and here’s what I found.

The service had reached a high of around 146 points profit back in July 2024, but by the time I joined the trial on 10th June, it was sitting at 67.69 points. That’s quite a significant drop, which suggests there have been some sharp ups and downs over the months.

Of course, that kind of volatility is hard to judge without knowing more about the strike rate, average odds and losing runs. It just goes to show why these live trials are so important, to see how a service performs under real conditions.

It’ll be interesting to see how things unfold from here. I’ve signed up to follow the selections in real time and I’ll be sharing my results each month to see whether the service can bounce back.

With no advice on a starting bank as far as I can see, I will go with the standard 100 points.

Key Details

The service provides horse racing tips advised as Betfair SP bets. The advice includes stakes that should be used for each bet.

All tips are sent out via email, but they can also be accessed via a member’s area.

Beat the Jolly Review Results

Results Update #1

It’s been a brutal opening month for Beat The Jolly, with the trial getting off to a terrible start.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve tracked 34 bets to Betfair SP and just one of them has landed.

That’s resulted in a loss of 26.91 points, or £269.10 to £10 stakes, which is obviously a disappointing return.

Here are the results for the first month of my trial:

Of course, it’s only the first month and one good result can swing things back in the right direction. But there’s no denying it’s been a gruelling start, both for the tipster and anyone following along.

I’ll keep tracking the tips and return with another update next month, hopefully with a more positive story to tell.

Results Update #2

It was a much better month for the Beat the Jolly tips service after a pretty dire start to the trial in month one. This time, the tipster delivered 10 winners from 45 bets, finishing the month with a profit of £122.90, or 12.29 points.

A losing streak towards the end had me worried after the last major losing streak of 23 bets in a row! Fortunately, this time the tipster rounded the month off nicely with a winning bet priced at 11.00.

My results for month two:

A much better month, but with the trial still 14.63 points in the red, the service has work to do to get back into profit. The next few months will be crucial.

Results Update #3

Although things were looking up in my last update, the tipster has continued to deliver poor results in the third month of my trial. I lost a further 31.15 points, or £311.50 to £10 stakes.

This means that my total for the trial overall adds up to a loss of 45.78 points.

My results for month three:

Final Verdict

Sometimes I’d consider extending a trial to see if a tipster can bounce back, but not this time.

The overall results since the service began now show a loss of 12.28 points, which is essentially like going back to square one.

That doesn’t inspire much confidence for the future, so I’m going to move on from this one and focus my time on other services that show more promise.

If you still want more information on Beat the Jolly, despite my verdict, find out more here.
