Introduction

The Momentum System is a Betfair trading strategy from Mike Cruickshank, designed specifically for the football correct score markets.

Mike is well known in the industry for creating betting systems and products built around mathematically sound strategies, including Each Way Sniper (read my review here).

While he is best known for matched betting services, the Momentum System takes a different approach. It is a Betfair trading system that operates entirely on Betfair Exchange, so there is no need to rely on bookmaker accounts.

Mike positions it as a natural next step for matched bettors who want to move into trading.

The system is completely value-based, with selections chosen according to positive EV.

I tested the Momentum System myself to see how it worked in practice. In this review, I’ll explain the strategy, show you the tools included and share my results.

What is Included with the Momentum System?

  • Software that finds value trades for you
  • Calculator that works out your stakes
  • Quick start guide
  • Live trading video series

Interestingly, Mike has put together a free webinar that gives away quite a bit about how the system works. You might wonder why he would do that, but there’s a good reason.

The fact is, even if you understand the Momentum System’s strategy inside out, you still need those all important value selections to make it work.

Basically, it’s not just about knowing how to trade, but also knowing what to trade.

Without Mike’s specific filters, which he’s developed and refined, you really can’t expect to turn a consistent profit in the long-term. The real value of the service therefore lies in the filters Mike has developed to identify suitable selections.

How Does the System Work?

The main thing to understand is that the whole point of this correct score trading system is to lock in a profit, whatever happens on the pitch.

You will be placing bets before the match kicks off and then betting on different score lines that oppose each other.

Once the match goes in-play, the odds start to move, as you’d expect.

That’s your window of opportunity!

As the odds fall, you’ll find that you can trade out and secure a profit. You might be thinking, but what if there is a goal? There is a strategy in place for that too.

If you’ve done any trading on Betfair before, whether it was trading football or other types of sports trading, this aspect of the Momentum System will feel pretty familiar.

However, if you’re completely new to Betfair trading, don’t let that put you off!

Mike Cruickshank has a knack for breaking things down so that they are easier to understand. He’s really good at explaining things in a way that beginners can grasp.

He takes you through the process step by step and there are plenty of video examples.

Key Details

What size starting bank is needed?

There isn’t a set starting bank advised for this system, but Mike says that £100 is fine to get started. He does advise paper trading at first so that you can get used to how the system works.

How much time does it take?

Each trade will take a maximum of 45 minutes to complete, but there are many occasions where you will be in and out of the trade much sooner. It depends on how the match unfolds, of course.

Can you trade multiple games at the same time?

You can, but it isn’t advised.

Making a mistake could cut into your profits, so focusing on one game at a time is the best plan. Mike reckons that more advanced users could potentially trade three matches at once.

Personally, I found trying to trade more than one match at a time was tricky. I would seriously suggest sticking to one, securing your profit and then moving on to the next.

Is compounding stakes a good strategy?

Absolutely!

Compounding, where you reinvest your profits into the next trade, is a great way to accelerate your bank growth. It’s like a snowball effect, really.

We would strongly recommend sticking with the same stake until you’re completely comfortable with how the system works.

Don’t run before you can walk, as they say.

Get a solid understanding of the system first, then start thinking about compounding. It’s about being sensible and building your bank steadily.

My Experience Testing the Momentum System

I wanted to give The Momentum System a test run, just to see how the trading process actually played out in real life. Here I share everything I learned about it.

Finding Suitable Value Trades

Firstly, finding trades was simple.

The software is really user-friendly and those familiar with Mike’s other products will see some similarities in the design.

As you can see below, it highlights all the selections that meet the system’s criteria. Anything with a rating over 100 is a value selection, which means it’s ideal for trading.

I also had to keep an eye on the CS Matched column, making sure there was at least £5,000 matched. This is crucial because there needs to be enough liquidity in the market to trade out when you need to.

You’ll find that more money tends to flood into these markets the nearer it gets to kick-off.

Entering a Trade

Once I had found a suitable selection, I headed over to Betfair Exchange to check that the odds were the same as what the software was showing.

Occasionally, I did find that the odds had shifted a bit. This wasn’t too much of an issue, as I just queued my bets at the required odds and got matched before kick-off.

Some people might not feel comfortable with queuing bets and that’s fair enough. If you’re uneasy with it, you can just skip that selection and move on to another one.

On a weekend, there are often plenty to choose from.

Using the Momentum System Calculator

The next thing to do was to enter the odds into the Momentum System calculator.

This is where the magic happens.

As you can see in the example below, after inputting the odds, the calculator automatically worked out my stakes for me. All I had to do then was to place the bets and wait for the match to start.

In this example, I entered a £100 max liability. However, as long as you follow the strategy correctly and make the recommended in-play moves, technically you’re not actually risking the full £100.

This is just a snapshot of the calculator, but below that section, it gives you all the details of the bets you need to place during the match. It also shows you what you need to do to “green up” the trade, or lock in a profit regardless of the outcome.

I found that it was clearly laid out, which was a big plus.

Testing the Momentum System

I’m pleased to say that all four of my test trades produced a profit. While this wasn’t a long-term trial, it was enough for me to get a clear feel for how the system works in practice.

The strategy is very rules-based, so once you understand the process and follow the recommended in-play moves, the mechanics are quite straightforward. My aim was mainly to see how smoothly the trades played out in real conditions rather than build up a huge sample of results.

I traded four selections altogether:

  • Shandong Taishan v Gwangju FC +£4.70
  • Juventus v PSV +£3.40
  • Sheff Utd v Middlesbrough +£4.90
  • Union St Gilloise v Ajax +£7.93

For my test trades, I used a £500 stake on each selection.

As I mentioned earlier, this wasn’t necessarily the full amount at risk. By following the recommended in-play moves, the aim is to reduce your exposure as the trade progresses.

During these trades, I felt comfortable following the recommended exits and was able to secure a profit on each one. It also gave me confidence that, with practice, the process would become easier and quicker to manage.

I could also see how compounding stakes could help accelerate bank growth over time if the system continued to perform well.

There was one thing I did notice that’s worth pointing out.

Exiting the trade is done in stages, and sometimes it can be tricky to get matched in-play at the exact odds shown by the calculator. Things move quickly, so the price may have shifted slightly by the time you place your bet.

I experienced this during the Juventus v PSV match, when I missed the recommended trade odds slightly. However, I was still able to adjust my exit and secure a profit.

This is something I think would become easier with practice. The more familiar you become with the system, the quicker you should get at reacting to in-play price movements and recognising when to place your bets.

Can The Momentum System be Automated?

I had heard that Mike used to provide an automation bot to trade the Momentum System for you.

I wasn’t able to test the automation bot myself. However, feedback I received from some users who had tried it was mixed, with several mentioning difficulties around automatically greening up trades.

There were apparently quite a few things that could go wrong, which isn’t ideal when you’re dealing with real money.

Personally, I prefer to have more control over my trades.

I can totally see why automating the strategy would be appealing to a lot of people, as the idea of setting it and forgetting it is definitely attractive.

I’ve heard that some traders have had a bit of success using software like Bet Angel to automate the trading out process. The problem is, it requires a bit of expertise to get right.

It’s definitely possible, but it’s not a simple solution. I’m quite happy sticking with the good old-fashioned way of doing things!

Final Verdict

Testing the Momentum System gave me a positive first impression of the strategy and how it works in practice. All four of my test trades were profitable, although this was obviously far too small a sample to judge its long-term performance.

What I particularly liked was the emphasis on finding value selections rather than simply trading arbitrary matches. The selection software makes suitable trades easy to identify, while Mike Cruickshank’s explanations and video tutorials make the system accessible even if you’re relatively new to Betfair trading.

There is a bit of a learning curve, particularly when it comes to getting matched at the required odds and managing the trade in-play, so I would definitely recommend paper trading first.

Overall, I think the Momentum System is a strong introduction to Betfair trading, particularly for anyone coming from a matched betting background. Based on my experience testing it, I’m happy to recommend it.
